This year there was a surprise in the helicopter on the tower in Rialto. The mother owl made a racket when she cleared the cockpit, but her 6 owlets made no sound.

Mon, 18 Apr 2011 08:00:00 -0700 Cave Training http://caverescue.net/cave-training http://caverescue.net/cave-training

We spent the day practicing cave search, horizontal movement, and vertical rescue techniques. We have found that radios work well in Southern California boulder-talus caves. The litter shield designed by Paul Stovall for use on the OSS works well too. A dropped radio bounced off the patient's face without incident...to the patient. There are a variety of skylights in a boulder-talus cave that may be suitable for evacuation, but it is often difficult to assess them from the top or bottom exclusively. We put an avalance transceiver on each search team to be activated in the event that they found the patient. This was then used to attempt to pinpoint their location from the surface. Amazingly, it worked rather well. This will warrent further study.

Riverside County Sheriff requested additional resources to search for a missing backcountry skier on Mt. San Jacinto. The Cave Team responded, and team members were placed on three different teams. The recent snow made travel very strenuous, making skis a viable option for travel. Fortunately, the skier was located in the Willow Creek drainage by a team from Kern County's China Lake Rescue Group

Fri, 26 Nov 2010 23:56:00 -0800 Two Missions on Mt. Baldy http://caverescue.net/cave-team-responding-to-search-in-the-baldy-a http://caverescue.net/cave-team-responding-to-search-in-the-baldy-a

West Valley SAR received a call Friday night for some overdue hikers in the Baldy area whose family said that they were going to "walk the creek". The missing 21 and 13 year old were to return at dark, and when they failed to show, their family notified authorities. Sheriff's Aviation was also on scene and was successful in locating the missing hikers in Stead Canyon. Throughout the night, a ground team attempted to locate the hikers, but due to the brush, and lack of response to their shouts and whistles, the searchers were not able to establish contact. The Cave & Technical Rescue Team was called to assist in the location of these hikers. Just as the team arrived, Sheriff's Aviation launched a rescue ship which was successful in hoisting the two hikers and their dogs. After a chilly night, and a short helicopter ride, the two hikers were released to their family. It was the first time that Aviation had used the large cordura bags that they procured for hoisting dogs. Each dog was muzzled by the owner and placed in a large bag for the hoist. At the LZ the dogs did NOT want to come out of the bags. Eventually their happy disposition returned.

Just as the air crew was gathering their gear, Baldy Fire caught a call for an unconscious hiker on the hut trail. The report said that by-standers were administering CPR, and that the patient was not responsive. Members of Baldy Fire, San Bernardino County Fire, and AMR made their way up the trail, while members of the Cave Rescue Team quickly joined them after gathering a litter, litter wheel, backboard, and oxygen bottle. Earlier in the day there were high winds in this area, so the team took this gear in the event that the patient would not be able to be hoisted, and required a litter evacuation.

Rescuers continued CPR and employed an AED, but the collapsed hiker never regained a heartbeat. Sheriff's Aviation returned to the Baldy area after fueling, and lowered a medic and litter. One member of San Bernardino Mountain Rescue Team and one Baldy Fire crew member walked the deceased hiker's girlfriend down the trail, while the remaining SAR members and fire crew packaged the hiker, and assisted in the hoist. Lehman, Metzger, and Truitt were on scene.
